Life of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
The future Indian guru was born in Papanasam, Tamil Nadu. At birth, he was given a common name in India - Ravi, which means "sun", and Shankar - in honor of the religious reformer Adi Shankar. The young Ravi's first teacher was Sudhakar Chaturvedi, an Indian Vedic scholar and close friend of Mahatma Gandhi. In 1970, Ravi received his B. A. from St. Joseph's College of Bangalore.university.
After completing his studies, Ravi Shankar traveled with his second teacher, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the founder of transcendental meditation. Together they talked a lot about spirituality and spoke at conferences where they shared their knowledge of Vedic science and Ayurveda.
In the 1980s, Shankar began a series of practical and experimental courses on gaining spirituality. One of the main components of his courses was breathing exercises - Sudarshan-kriya. According to Shankar Ravi, the rhythmic breathing practice came to him like inspiration after a ten-day period of silence on the banks of the Bhadra River in Shimoga, Karnataka.
In 1983, Shankar taught the first course, called "The Art of Living", in Switzerland. In 1986, he traveled to California to conduct his course in North America.
Philosophy and teachings
An Indian guru teaches that spirituality is anything that enhances human values such as love, compassion and inspiration. Ravi Shankar's art of living is not limited to any one religion or spiritual movement. He believes that the spiritual connection that people experience is much more important than nationality, gender, religion, profession, or other categories that separate them along various lines.
According to Guru Ji, science and spirituality are inextricably linked with each other, as they both arise from the desire for knowledge. The question "who am I?" leads a person to spirituality, and the question “what is it?” leads to scientific knowledge. Shankar Ravi claims that joy is only available in the present moment, so the goal of his teaching is to create a world free from stress and violence.
