Choosing what to read from new fanfiction, you may stumble upon the term "selfcest", which has become widely used relatively recently.
What is selfcest? Where can you meet him? Why has he become so popular? Read this article and find out.
What is a selfcest?
Selfcest is a term used by fiwriters. Ficwriters are those who write stories based on pre-existing stories such as Harry Potter.
So, the Fandom term "selfcest" will make Harry Potter love himself. How is this possible? Magic.
But, seriously, selfcest has several manifestations:
- Narcissism and self-admiration. There will be no magic here, an exceptionally great love of a person or some other creature for himself. Usually such heroes are satisfied with masturbation in front of a mirror and do not pay attention to others. Even if daffodils are surrounded entirely by ideal princesses and princes, he will remain indifferent to their charms. For such a character, only he exists.
- Time travel. Usually the wiser and more experienced hero goes tothe past and for some reason cannot (or does not want to) return to its own time. He helps himself from the past, and becomes attached. Or vice versa: the previous version of the hero begins to fall in love with his wise self.
- Dividing the hero into "dark" and "light". The two opposing parts begin to fight for dominance not only with their fists, but also in bed.
- The concept of the multiverse stirs the imagination of fans. Just imagine: in one reality the hero is a man, and in another a woman! If you combine them, then this will also be a selfcest.
But seriously, selfcest is not only a sexual connection with yourself. Some works that have this mark in the warnings to the reader are well worth the attention and time spent on them.
Where did he come from?
So, having figured out what a selfcest is, it's worth finding out where it comes from. One cannot judge such a direction without knowing its origins!
Unfortunately, there is no exact date. It is impossible to name the exact moment of the appearance of such an idea as a selfcest. What is self-love and how it is expressed, thought long before our era.
One of the first manifestations of self-cest can be considered the story of Narcissus, who is in love with his reflection. He ended badly, as you remember. So don't get carried away with narcissism.
Selfcest received a second wind along with the development of creativity of fans of anime, manga, series and books. The Fikliters lacked one favorite hero, so theycreated a copy of him, with which the hero fell in love or which he began to passionately desire.
Where does he meet?
You can find echoes of selfcest in the fandom of popular fandoms. "Harry Potter", "Naruto", "Game of Thrones" and "Doctor Who" - perhaps, "suffered" the most. Potter and Naruto especially got it: in the first case, fanfictions on the theme of time travel are extremely popular, in the second, the main character can clone himself an unlimited number of times.
Probably, the creators of these works did not think about this interpretation of their stories. But fans are fans.
Why is selfcest popular?
There are several reasons why selfcest has become so popular:
- Confrontation of the traits of the hero. Stupid against smart, strong against weak, wise against inexperienced, dark against light. Only this fight is not fought with swords, but in a more peaceful way: "No war, make love!".
- Multiverses. Fans like to pit two identical characters who have gone through different lives or have different genders. Just because it's fun.
- In any person there are sprouts of narcissism. What is selfcest? That is self love! Although somewhat perverse, it is still present.
Examples of selfcest
If you still don't quite understand what isselfcest, let's make some simple stories. No vulgarity, everything within the bounds of decency:
There once was a boy who had a prophecy. He had to save the world. Due to some events, he is next to him, only from the future. The boy is smitten with the time traveler's charisma and begins to develop affection for him. He does not relate the traveler to himself
Good plot for a yaoi manga, isn't it? Everything must end well there, because the boy and his adult version live in the multiverse.
Once upon a time there was Narcissus. He was so beautiful and so intoxicated with his beauty that he did not need anyone. Loving himself and pleasing himself was enough for him. As a result, he died alone near the mirror when he saw that his beauty began to fade
A sad tale not suitable for a yaoi manga, but it is a good example of a self-cest without magic.
