To facilitate their work, the craftsmen have developed many home-made designs of the tilter for the engine.

There aren't really many options. In the West, complex and bulky home-made structures are known, like a beam crane, almost with hydraulic drives.

In domestic conditions, motorists assemble the simplest designs from what is at hand. Of the self-made tilters for the engine, two-bearing and cantilever versions are known. The easiest to manufacture is the last design. Its characteristics are sufficient for overhaul of almost any passenger car engine.vehicle weighing between 150 and 250 kg.

Drawings and dimensions

Before proceeding with the manufacture of the unit, it is necessary to study in detail the existing models of engine repair stands. The sample is selected for the urgent needs of an amateur car mechanic. The availability of materials, dimensions for the convenience of working in a small garage are assessed. The allowable load weight is calculated according to the type of engine to be repaired.

According to the results of the study of existing structures, a draft drawing of the most optimal version of the cantilever type tilter was developed. Overall dimensions on the diagram are given in millimeters.

Materials for making

Due to the fact that the engine tilter will have to work under severe physical conditions associated with the weight of the engine, high demands are placed on materials.

The following materials are used for manufacturing:

  • steel square profile 70 x 70 with a wall thickness of 3 mm, length 3 m;
  • steel pipe with outer diameter 60mm, inner diameter 53mm, length 245mm;
  • steel pipe with outer diameter 47mm, length 480mm;
  • steel channel with inner side width 70mm, wall thickness 3-4mm, length 280mm;
  • flange for bolting to the engine - 1 pc

Tools and hardware for stand assembly

To connect nodesmetal structures from a steel channel and a square profile will definitely need a welding machine that allows you to work with an electrode with a cross section of at least 3-4 mm. In addition, cutting will require a grinder with a cutting disc for metal with a diameter of 115-125 mm. To ensure the bolted connection of prefabricated parts, you will need a drill with the ability to work with a drill with a diameter of up to 14-20 mm. M12 bolts are also required to assemble the structure.

You will also need a set of files to cut burrs and jagged edges, remove metal cutting flaws. It does not hurt to buy an emery cloth to clean the surface from rust before painting.

The first step is to cut the channel and square profile in accordance with the sketch. Next, a vertical rack is made from a profile and welded to a square from a channel. Then the structure is reinforced with metal slopes, which can be made from scrap parts.

After that, a base is welded from a cut square profile - a tilter stand for repairing engines. At the place of bolted connection to the base of the vertical rack, preparatory work is carried out, steel bushings are inserted and welded to reinforce the structure.

Then you should proceed to the final assembly of the engine tilter. The stand is connected to the stand by welding and M12 bolts.

A horizontal pipe with an outerdiameter 60 mm and internal 52 mm. A horizontal axis is inserted into this part. It can be made from a steel pipe with a diameter of 47 mm with a welded flange for bolting the cylinder block or cylinder head.

In the horizontal axis, through holes can be drilled every 45° along the radius, to be able to fix the position in space with pins, after turning the attached motor to the desired angle.

Assembled engine tilter should be cleaned and primed and then painted with nitro enamel to prevent metal corrosion and improve the quality of the overhaul.

If a collapsible design is not required, the vertical stand can be attached to the stand not by bolting, but by welding. After that, the device will allow you to work with heavier motors. As you know, 1 cm of the weld can withstand 100 kg of load. And this is a lot. One can imagine what kind of load a home-made unit welded along all the edges of the joints can withstand. It can even turn into a YaMZ engine tilter.

When cutting metal with a grinder, you should wear goggles, a respirator, and work gloves. This is due to the danger of sparks and glass dust on the skin, eyes and respiratory tract.

While electric welding, you must wear a protective mask to protect your eyes from bright flashes. What for? During welding, ultraviolet radiation occurs, which, without a mask, can lead toa kind of tanning of the skin of the face and open surfaces, damage to the eyes. Due to the risk of electric shock, when welding, it is also necessary to wear protective gloves, it is advisable to ground the machine. In practice, canvas gloves are used, they also protect against thermal burns.

You must have an OU-2 or OU-5 carbon dioxide fire extinguisher on hand. Any spark in the garage can lead to unpredictable consequences.

But in general, a homemade tilting stand should not create safety problems if assembled without hack-work. On the contrary, it makes it possible to significantly facilitate the work of the minder, reduce injuries, forget about crushed or pinched fingers, torn lower backs. In general, this is a useful unit in the household, which is not inferior in quality to the industrial tilter for the AE engine.
