At the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Florence Griffin-Joyner became the women's 100m and 200m champion. She set an unbeatable record of 10.49 seconds. In addition, the athlete became the winner in the 200 meters race, whichran in a record 21.34 seconds.
American Michael McCastle holds a new world record for the most number of pull-ups per day. The athlete pulled himself up 5804 times in 24 hours.
Yarmila Kratohviliva set the absolute record in running at the Women's World Championships at a distance of 800 meters. She managed to run the race in 1983 in just 1.53 minutes. Ana Fidelia Quirog tried to approach her record - 1:54:44 and Pamela Jelimo - 1:54:01.
The undivided achievement in women's high jump belongs to Bulgarian Stefka Kostadinova. The athlete in 1987 jumped to a height of 2.09 meters. There were contenders who tried to break the record of the Bulgarian athlete. Blanka Vlašić, Kaisa Bergvist and Anna Chicherova challenged the record holder but to no avail.

A key role in the development of this sport was played by competitions that were organized in 1805 in the Netherlands province - Friesland. However, the first officially recorded competitions were held in Great Britain in 1863. Since then, Great Britain has been considered one of the organizers of speed skating. Great Britain was the first in the world to host a national championship, which took place in 1879. Over its long history, this sport has managed to give the world champions with their records:

Pavel Kulizhnikov is the absolute record holder. Passed 500 meters in 33.98 seconds at a speed of 52.94 km/h.
Canadian Jeremy Wotherspoon ran the 500m in 68.31 seconds at 52.70 km/h.
American Shani Davis ran the 1000 meters in 1:06.42 at 54.20 km/h.
