A large, most often giant pattern on Earth is commonly called a geoglyph. Tree lettering is one of its varieties, made by planting seedlings or seeds in a strictly defined order. As a rule, such an object can only be viewed from a height. This kind of, one might say, monumental art was not secret, but did not attract much attention to itself for a long time. The change began with the widespread dissemination of satellite photographs of the earth's surface on the Internet.
In the expanses of the former Soviet land
During the Soviet era, the compilation of various slogans and appeals from planted trees and shrubs became widespread. Some of the most popular were phrases and words associated with the founder of the party and the state. The inscription "Lenin" made of trees is found in different parts of the former Soviet Union. For example In Belarus, Kharkov region of Ukraine, in various regions of Russia (the inscription located near Ulyanovsk is currently partially cut down).
There are other variants of the phrases - “100 Lenin”, “1870-1970 100 - Lenin”, “Lenin 100years". They were created in many places of the former USSR in 1970, when the country widely celebrated the 100th anniversary of the birth of its founder. The next series of similar geoglyphs was created in 1972 for the 50th anniversary of the formation of the USSR. There were other inscriptions for other dates. For example, for the 60th anniversary of the USSR, the 30th, 40th and 60th anniversary of the Victory over fascism, the 50th and 60th anniversary of the October Revolution, objects glorifying the ruling party (CPSU) were created. Near the settlement of Aktanash (Tatarstan, Russia) one can observe the inscription from the trees "Aktanash", there are also such geoglyphs as "XXV" and "XXX". The location of these objects is Ukraine and Moldova. Apparently, the Ukrainian version is dedicated to the next congress of the CPSU. Again, Ukraine has an inscription made of trees "2000" in the Vinnitsa region, in Russia there is a similar inscription, "200", in the Bryansk region.
The most interesting thing is that being on the surface, you can't read such words and phrases, at best you can see them from an airplane. And only man's spacewalk opened this art form in all its fullness and diversity.
Foreign objects
Outside the former Soviet Union, tree inscriptions are much less common among geoglyphs. So, in the former Yugoslavia there is the Tito facility, created in honor of the commander of the partisan army of this country, Josip Broz Tito. After the war, for a long time he was the leader of the Yugoslav communists and the president of the country. His death led to disputes for power in the country, the outbreak of civil war and the collapse of the state. So Tito can be safely considered andthe only president of post-war Yugoslavia.
In Bulgaria there is also an inscription made of trees - "We have come to Sofia district"
In memory of the glorious Victory
One of the most significant events for the creation of geoglyphs has recently become thematic tree planting in the Korochansky district (Belgorod region). A unique artificial grove was created near the village of Pogorelovka, not far from the town of Korochi. In that place called the Mass Grave, in 1943, the Nazi invaders shot local residents. The tree inscription “70 Years of Victory” is a composition of symbols 30 m high (letters) and 70 m high (numbers). In total, 10 thousand pine seedlings were planted on an area of about 1 ha. The inscription will be clearly visible from the air and from Earth orbit, although it will take a little while for the trees to grow.
The laying of the geoglyph took place this April 25, 2015. The ceremony was attended by guests and official delegations from all regions included in the Central Federal District, Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Central Federal District Alexander Beglov, Governor of the Belgorod Region Evgeny Savchenko, veterans of the Great Patriotic War and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the region. In addition, the regional Public Council under the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, students of the cadet class of the local school, young riot police, joined the action. The police, Cossacks and people's guards were engaged in maintaining order and ensuring security.
At the rally, the speakers noted that the forest being laid down will embody greatnessand the significance of the triumph over fascism in 1945 and to remind of the price of millions of lives paid by our people for this victory.
It remains to be added that the inscription made of trees in the Belgorod region is part of the Victory Forest project, which is carried out by the Green Russia environmental movement. This is an all-Russian public organization. The purpose of the project is to plant trees in memory of 27 million citizens who fell in the harsh time of great trials. In practice, the number of trees planted as part of the action should symbolize the human losses of the countries of the former USSR. In the Korochansky district, 13 thousand people did not return from the battlefields, so its residents warmly supported this action.
But the inscription made of trees in the Belgorod region is not the only one created in honor of the glorious Victory. Similar geoglyphs are planted in other regions of Russia. In particular, in the Crimea, seven thousand seedlings were used to create such an object. The most grandiose inscription was created in the Omsk region, the participants of the action in the amount of 300 people planted about 35 thousand pine seedlings on an area of 605 hectares. The dimensions of the letters were 100 x 75 m. So far, passengers of planes departing from Omsk can watch this creation, but it will be possible to see the inscription from trees from space in 10-15 years, when young pines grow up.
Conclusion
As can be seen from this material, geoglyphs have been a fairly common form of decoration of the earth's surface since ancient times - take at least the famous drawings in the Nazca desert (interestingly, who could have seen them from a bird's eye view or from Earth's orbit a few thousand years ago?). They are created in our time. But what is characteristic, inscriptions made of trees are found mainly within the former USSR. Obviously, there can be only one reason here - the creation of a geoglyph is very laborious and expensive, it is obvious that a drawing can be understood by a larger number of observers than an inscription in one of the world's languages. However, this is just a guess.
