The leaves are up to 17 centimeters long, they are especially beautiful in autumn, when they acquire an extraordinary golden color. Flowers bloom in spring. Brown or purple color makes them easycharming. Flowering lasts a week, but never less than four days. A distinctive feature of the elm is that the flowers always appear before the leaves. Its fruits are small green wings.
Conditions for good growth
Scotch elm among trees is considered a long-liver, it can exist for 400 years. It grows very quickly, but is demanding on habitat conditions. The most important conditions for its cultivation are the presence of fertile loosened soil, sufficient moisture and good lighting. But, nevertheless, the tree is great for city parks, because it quickly adapts to urban living conditions, it is quite gas resistant. Elm is able to withstand severe and prolonged frosts.
Periodically, he needs to do pruning to form a crown. The only big drawback is that the rough elm easily succumbs to Dutch disease. And the causative agents of this disease are elm sapwood. Therefore, the elm, despite its natural masculinity and noble stamina, needs human protection from these harmful insects in the form of various preventive measures.
