Rough elm (photos confirm this) is a very beautiful tree, large in size and with a lush crown, which is often found in our parks. It is planted not only singly, but also in rows. Elm looks especially good in the alleys, along with a stocky oak, burly linden or detailed maple. It has other names: naked elm, mountain elm. Scientists suggest that this tree is native to Russia and the Scandinavian Peninsula.
External Features
The height of the rough elm can reach 40 meters. Its bark is smooth. It comes in two colors: gray or brown. Branches, usually brown in color, and leaves of deep dark green color form a large and dense crown. In its dense shade it is cool even on a hot sunny day. The leaves are up to 17 centimeters long, they are especially beautiful in autumn, when they acquire an extraordinary golden color. Flowers bloom in spring. Brown or purple color makes them easycharming. Flowering lasts a week, but never less than four days. A distinctive feature of the elm is that the flowers always appear before the leaves. Its fruits are small green wings.
Conditions for good growth
Scotch elm among trees is considered a long-liver, it can exist for 400 years. It grows very quickly, but is demanding on habitat conditions. The most important conditions for its cultivation are the presence of fertile loosened soil, sufficient moisture and good lighting. But, nevertheless, the tree is great for city parks, because it quickly adapts to urban living conditions, it is quite gas resistant. Elm is able to withstand severe and prolonged frosts.
Periodically, he needs to do pruning to form a crown. The only big drawback is that the rough elm easily succumbs to Dutch disease. And the causative agents of this disease are elm sapwood. Therefore, the elm, despite its natural masculinity and noble stamina, needs human protection from these harmful insects in the form of various preventive measures.
Decorative shapes
The tree propagates with the help of seeds. They are planted immediately after maturation. Grown seedlings can be transplanted.
Scotch elm has a number of decorative forms. They depend primarily on the shape of the crown. On this basis, they distinguish:
- pyramidal;
- weeping;
- dwarf.
According to the type of leaf blades, the following forms are distinguished: horned, curly, large-leaved. By leaf color: purple, dark purple and yellowish.
Scotch elm pendula
This is a decorative species up to 5 meters high with a crown diameter of about 10 m. Weeping densely branched branches descend to the ground with age. The tree blooms in May, but the flowers are small and not too bright. The leaves are rough on top and have a dark green color, they are unequal and are held on short petioles. On fertile loose soils grow quickly. Light-loving plant, frost-resistant. Easily tolerates pruning. Mainly used for single landings. But with some effort, you can form pretty arches or tents out of it.
