His whole life from the moment he entered the school was inextricably linked with the fleet. He made a significant contribution to shipbuilding, supervised the construction of the Yermak icebreaker. Stepan Osipovich died during the Russo-Japanese War in 1904 near Port Arthur, blown up by a mine.
