The Vologda hydroelectric power station, built back in 1953, is of great importance for the entire city: it ensures the operation of the energy system, river communications, and water supply. In addition, the HPP is officially recognized as a cultural heritage.

Besides this, the Vologda River is actively used for commercial and recreational fishing. Salmon and nelma are caught here (the area of the Okolnaya Sukhona channel), and quite large pike are also often caught. In the upper reaches of the river, pike perch, smelt, and bream are found. In the lower reaches, they mainly fish for perch and roach.

Some of the fish stocks are sent for sale directly to the city of Vologda, while others are imported to all regions of Russia.

Besides commercial value, the river carries many minerals. Mostly non-metallic sedimentary rocks are found here. The swampy area, which is located outside the city of Vologda, is rich in huge reserves of peat. There are also deposits of various types of clay, limestone, dolomites. Some of these resources are not only of great value to the area, butand are the property of the Russian Federation.
