The Trubezh River flows into Lake Pleshcheyevo, which has the status of a National Park. Here stands the ancient Russian city of Pereslavl-Zalessky. The history of the river and its current life are full of interesting facts. What keeps the memory of the past of these places? What is the current ecological state of the Trubezh River? Which of the local attractions are associated with her name?

Many namesakes

The study of geographical names often surprises with a variety of curiosities of toponymy. Here, for example, Trubezh is an amazing river. It turns out that there are a lot of the same or very similar names. And there are countless namesakes by the Trubezh River in Pereslavl-Zalessky, and not only in Russia.

There is a river in Ukraine with that name. There, the Trubezh is a left tributary of the Dnieper River 4,700 m2with a basin area, a valley 5 km wide and about 10 m deep. It is formed there at the confluence of the Pletenka and Pavlovka rivers, and with a length of 10 km, it is used by a small fleet for only a couple of kilometers.

Ukrainian Trubezh reaches the Kanev reservoir, is fed mainly by snow and has a canalized channel. This waterwaycrosses several districts of the Kyiv and Chernihiv regions (Kozeletsky, Baryshevsky, Bobrovitsky and others). Its source is in the village of Petrovsky.

In fact, five rivers are called Trubezh in the Dnieper basin!

The Trubezh flows into the Oka River from the right side. This is the Ryazan region. The Oka basin has two Trubezh. The Trubezh, the right tributary of the Psel River, also flows through the Kursk region of Russia.

There is also the Trubezh River, which flows into the famous Pleshcheyevo Lake, and takes its source in the Berendey Swamp. This 36-kilometer river is known for the fact that in its mouth in ancient times, Yuri Dolgoruky founded the city of Pereslavl-Zalessky, today's pearl of the Golden Ring of Russia.

There is a hypothesis that the coincidence of hydronyms (names of water bodies) is evidence of population migration in the past.

But there is no clear evidence and documents confirming the resettlement and the corresponding transfer of the hydronym Trubezh (as well as the name of the city of Pereslavl) from the banks of the Dnieper to Kleshchino Lake (as Pleshcheyevo used to be called).

Perhaps Prince Yuri used these names as symbols. After all, he was thinking about getting the Grand Duke of Kyiv throne. There are also suggestions that as a child he lived in Pereyaslavl-Russian (today's Pereyaslavl-Khmelnitsky). And that is why he named the city he founded on Trubezh so.

And in general, the map of the Russian Federation is literally replete with the same root names of water bodies: Trubyn and Truba, Trubyash, Trubelnya and Trubets and so on.

The names of the rivers, most likely,originated from the element pipe-, which means "river branch", its so-called sleeve or channel. This or a similar name is found in many modern Slavic languages.

Expect trouble from the water. Ancient legends

In the old days in Little Russia, it was believed that the Trubezh was made by human hands: it was dug to drain the place for the settlement and as a reliable barrier against enemy raids.

And the inhabitants of Pereslavl-Zalessky told another legend. Allegedly, Lake Pleshcheyevo, into which the Trubezh flows, will break through and bury the entire city under its waters, and this will be the beginning of the doomsday. Some old-timers still take this prophecy seriously and expect trouble from water.

Ecological state of the river

At present, the Trubezh River in Pereslavl has noticeably shallowed, which was full-flowing in the middle of the last century, replete with a variety of fish and pine coastal forests. This happened because the swamps were drained, the level of groundwater dropped.

For the indicated reasons, the course of the Trubezh has become much slower than usual. The river, as they say, silted up and overgrown. Now they are trying to clear it at least in the area of the city where it flows.

New bridge

The northern part of the city on Trubezh is connected to the southern part by a recently reconstructed bridge. The old one was in disrepair for a long time. Now the bridge is decorated with decorativeballs on granite pedestals, and the coastal zone has been landscaped. The bridge itself has become a safe and environmentally friendly reinforced concrete structure of three spans.

The opening of this building in 2014, after an eight-month reconstruction, was received with great enthusiasm by the townspeople. Tsar Berendey and Peter I took part in the costumed performance. The middle of the bridge became the place of their long-awaited meeting. And after the grand opening, the bridge was "updated" by vintage cars, strollers in which mothers carried babies, and newlyweds.

Tourist attraction of Trubezh

Tourists are attracted by the variety of colors of light boats, the memory of which they take with them to numerous photos of the Trubezh River. Picturesque cafes at the very edge of the water, whose visitors traditionally share lunch with local ducks.

Wooden piers huddle along the banks overgrown with reeds. Many nearby houses have their own access to the water.

At the mouth of the river stands the most beautiful Orthodox Church of the Forty Martyrs. This place is extremely popular with the townspeople and guests of Pereslavl-Zalessky. The view of the Trubezh River and Lake Pleshcheyevo, which opens from a specially equipped observation deck, is truly magnificent in any weather. The church bell ringing floats over quiet or raging water and carries away the spirit of the observer into hoary antiquity. I think about those times when the city rampart was built, designed to protect Pereslavl from the enemy - another attraction of the city. It has survived to this day, and now its peaceful slopes offer a rest from hiking excursions, admiring the twisting satin ribbon of the Trubezh River that surrounds the rampart.
